It would appear the I am of two minds about the H1N1 vaccine. I believe it is probably necessary, but at the same time, I wonder how safe it is. Do I want to be on the receiving end of an "uh-oh" moment? As in ,"Uh-oh, we didn't know it had those side effects..." Maybe I'll wait.

I think it is probably as safe as any flu virus... it is dead, in the first place and it was developed with the technology used for all of them. This particular time, I'm not so worried. Of course, I am in a high risk group so I am supposed to have BOTH and the clinics have lines where you cannot sit... and I cannot stand for more than five minutes... FEH.

ReplyDeleteI noticed on the Today Show that Matt Lauer always, always and alwyas refers to the virus as swine flu. There was a doctor on recently and she kept using the term H1N1 and Lauer kept saying swine flu -- almost as if he could not use the term enough! Heh!
ReplyDeleteHere in Iowa the term swine flu is pretty much taboo - though I do hear it used by people but never on TV or the radio.
It makes no difference to me. Sort of like Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas. But I know it is an extremely sensitive term here in Iowa -- the #1 hog producing state in the country! Heh!

ReplyDeleteI've never gotten a flu vaccine - and never had the flu. But I admit I'm considering it this year because I'm traveling a lot for work. Too many strange, germy people out there!
ReplyDeleteWe're already in the midst of flu season here and there aren't any swine flu vaccines available to ordinary people - medical workers have received it. I was sick last week, and have some cold type symptoms this week so for all I know I have had the swine flu or the regular flu or something else entirely. Anyway, I think I'll take my chances and skip out on the vaccine whenever it does become available.

ReplyDeleteI haven't had a flu shot in 35 years...... That was the one and only time I was vaccinated. Seven months later I gave birth to twins. Coincidence? Maybe....

ReplyDelete... i said "most" because I think it's the most necessary thing on top of any personal decisions with regards to the prevention. we all knew that it's far more better to be vaccinated for protection than curing a viral infection. take care :-)
ReplyDeleteI had it this summer and was definitely sick. Tamiflu helped but it had bad side effects too. Most of the people in NYC I know who've had it just rode it out. Lots of Advil and water and sleep. Oh, and eat, helps bring the fever down.

Take care and be well, Jo! You know, I'm not certain about the vaccine either, but right now it's a moot point as it isn't available in my area for anyone outside of the high risk group :-)
ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is that this outbreak really doesn't seem all that different from most cold and flu seasons. Wherever I go, people are horking up a lung or two, as per usual when the winter starts to set in.
I don't take flu shots myself after a particularly unpleasant experience many years ago. Be well, take good care of yourself and don't worry - the fun will wait for your return.
ReplyDeleteI never get a flu shot. You get the flu you are sick for a week and you go back to work. You get a shot, who knows what is in it. My Doctor hates it when she asks me to get a flu shot and I say I don't believe in it. I know one of these years the flu is going to knock me on my can, but the last 20 years or so, not so much.
