How On Earth Do You Do It?

What's your secret? How do you do it? I can hardly keep up with you -- any of you. I barely have time to keep up with my own boring-little-blog. When I come home from work at the end of the day, almost the last thing I want to do is to sit down in front of a computer again, and yet it seems to be where all the action is these days. Blogger, Facebook, Twitter, you guys are everywhere...! How on earth do you do it? And you all manage to create such wonderful blog posts, and as soon as you have published, et voila! you have 50 comments. It's incredible...! I wish I had the time to visit all your fabulous blogs, but I have been venturing further and further away from my computer lately. For Christmas I was given eight absolutely fabulous books from my family and friends, plus a year's subscription to the New Yorker Magazine from my lovely friend Russell. I get lost in my books, and often wake up at 4:00 in the morning with my light still on, and my book lying next to me.

Computer? What's a computer...?

So I do apologize for my absence, and I will be back to visit you soon, and hopefully my books and New Yorker will give me more topics for blog posts, because goodness knows, my life is not as interesting as yours...!

In the meantime, while everyone in North American is freezing their butts off, here is a little video of the sunrise in balmy Vancouver this morning. Have a great day, everyone!

Cheers,

  1. Ha ha! Well, for myself, I don't have access to the computer all day at work. I teach PreK, so when I get home, I enjoy the quiet interactions with adult cyber friends and catching up on favorite blogs. I go back to work on Monday, so life will quiet down quite a bit for me!

  2. As long as I can keep the fingers thawed, I can type! I would rather sew... but my little sewing room is not heated and I can only stand it for short intervals! Even with a space heater, it just won't warm up!

  3. Its true, personal life does suffer when you are glued to this tube all the time. I found it most difficult during the holidays as there were so many great recipes, crafts and home tours of gorgeous holiday decorations to see. Now I try to limit myself to morning and before bed, but its very addictive (sp?)for me. Like you, I love reading and have a couple books on order, so hopefully that will help. Enjoy your books!

  4. Hi Jo, I agree, I don't try to keep up with everyone. Between my family life & my work in the studio (those being top priorities) my schedule is quite full. I have to limit time on online or I'd never get anything done :)

Yes, it was a beautiful sunrise, I was walking the pooches when the sun popped up this morning. We are quite blessed with our mild temps here...& I for one love the rain too!

Enjoy your books & happy reading!
    Jo

  5. Oh Jo, I know exactly what you mean. I also do not have time to blog every day and it often happens that I have nothing to say, but the thing that really keeps me busy, is reading everybody else's blogs... and they are so good, I don't want to miss out on one of them, especially not the one called A Majority of Two!

  6. I've only got a handful of blogs I check everyday, personally. Yours is one of them, but then yours was the very first I ever started to read. You feel special, don't you? I figured as much ;-)

Don't worry about being away from the computer, it's a good thing to send your mind on a variety of journeys.

  7. I've been wondering the same thing about you, Lady. You manage to post something nearly every day while I have fallen by the wayside and hardly ever do so. I still want to write and communicate with all my blog friends, but it just doesn't happen as often as it used to.

Enjoy your new books and New Yorker, which still has the best cartoons on earth.

  8. Loved your video! And, yes, I could hear the sea gulls in the background.

I would take a video, too, but all you would see is white! The wind is howling and the snow is blowing today.

Think I will just watch your video again .... and again .... and again...!

  9. Yes, I'm shoveling all that global warming off my driveway today. Lots of snow..very cold. But the good thing is, it will be over in about three months...maybe.

  10. Oh...and your blog posts are wonderful, but like you, trying to keep up with everyone is almost impossible. I just decided that I would do the best I could and that's all I can ask of myself.

  11. What rich lives we all lead! So much to see and do, to read and write. I only publish about once a week, and marvel at those who post more. I love to read books too, and try to get in an hour a day, mostly at bed-time. I think we need to prioritize what's important to each of us, write it down, place it in a prominent place, and check on it often! If we want to spend time with family and friends, but find we are spending more screen time, we need to re-evaluate. I LOVE my screen time, but must be vigilant to ensure it doesn't take over!
    Must fly,
    Kathryn : )

  12. Blogging is all I can do...and of course I am pretty anonymous so no one can find me. I facebooked for two weeks...and I actually felt it a waste of time for some people but when its all you got its all you got.

  13. Balderdash or some such... your blog is among the best out there that I've found so far... it is always a pleasure to come visit here.

And there is more to life than just blogging, by all means read those books and the New Yorker, wow, I'd love to read the New Yorker from time to time, but between work and family and photography and blogging about it, time is short these days...

    Happy New Year Jo !

  14. Ah well..... I like to mix it up with a few books too, but I have to admit that the Xmas holidays were my only chance....

You are right, blogging etc takes up vast amounts of time. It's easy to get sucked into Facebook and the others, but technology can make it easier to keep track. It's a question of finding what works for you. Maybe you prefer to keep away from the computer but could use an iPhone or BlackBerry ?

I think once you have started blogging etc, there is no going back !! But then I would say that... it's a great tool for my work.

  16. Well not all of us can spend every waking moment on our computers but it is such a nice diversion at times.I also love to read and wake with the light still on, that is when I manage to sleep. It seems I have less and less time lately but I love your writing so don't leave us too long. Wishing you a very happy new year.

  17. Jo, I wonder the same thing every day as I check my bloglist which is not half as long as most. Sometimes I imagine some people do nothing else. I find it great entertainment and a way to learn - you are one of the most prolific writers and, as far as I'm concerned, the best content blogger out there!

One great thing about this activity is that there really is no external pressure to produce. I'm retired and I've learned to divide my time so that I'm not obsessively doing any one thing.

I say read with no guilt - enjoy life, but please keep blogging, even if it's not as frequent!

  18. I do sometimes neglect my day job to write blog posts, I admit it. It's okay, I'm self employed. So, the only person I cheat is myself. Since, many days my day job involves calling people and desperately begging them to let me come visit them and sell them books, I need a break now and then. Still, I do not condone excessive internet use. It probably causes some horrible disease that they will find out about 30 years from now.

  19. I look forward to your blog the most out of all the blogs I read & trust me I read a lot!! Enjoy your books Jo, get lost in another time & place for a while.. I know once my kids are grown & I have 10 minutes to myself, I plan on read for years straight!

  20. I'll say "balderdash...or some such thing" along with Owen!?!?
I do love reading your blog!
I am constantly amazed at the wonderful things you find to write about...political, or a movie, or your mom... or your town...
AND you are one of those who has a gazillion comments and followers!
    you are loved!
    what a wonderful thing...
    keep it up
    keep reading...
I actually was away from this computer spot in my house these last few days and also READ a book!
keep taking the time to share with us...

  21. I'm am blessed (?) that I have a boring job so I am able to read a lot of blogs during the day at work. But I confess that I spend most evenings on the computer as well. And I read books & magazines. How do I find the time? I don't clean my house LOL!

P.S. The sunset was gorgeous! Like Russell, my video would be white...

  22. I took a night off last night.

Oh, I still posted (on both my blogs) but I didn't go visiting like I always do. I wanted to see some old episodes of All Creatures Great and Small and that is exactly what I did. I've got nothing to say for tonight and just may leave that post up. I don't know how people do it either, Jo.

And dang, my fingers are freezing as I type this!

  23. Dear Jo, it makes one glad that there are still people spending time with a book.
With regard to 'updates and its content', I usually keep a notepad close by, and whenever a thought pops up I write it down, looking at it later, to see what can be made of it.
A big help is also to do it while everyone is asleep - taking care of my young son during the night, provides many thoughts and keeps me awake.
Wishing you much time with your books and also enough for your site, which I do enjoy much.
Please have you all a wonderful Friday.

  24. I don't know how anyone does it either. I can't even post every day, and I still have pictures on the camera to download and post.
I didn't make it to work today, neither of the trucks (diesel) would start. When hubby finally got off the phone with work, he got the van started, and I sat in that 'fair weather' vehicle for 30 minutes keeping the rpms at 2000 so that it would recharge the battery in my truck. At -2 degrees F. And I have 7 books to read by next wednesday, and 3 more to pick up at the library. Guess I really don't have much time to blog, but I sure do enjoy reading yours!

  27. It totally boggles the mind, doesn't it? (how so many people can post, every day)! I suppose if we didn't work all day, it wouldn't be that hard. Love the video!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Well don't feel bad - I'm having the same problem. I'll only be posting every other day or so, for the same reasons. I need to read, walk, write other things. Life calls.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Oh, come on Jo! "Boring little blog"? That should be the title of mine. Don't think i've ever had as many comments on even one of my posts that you get all the time.

But you know what? There is a reason. And that is because we love you & love what you write. :)

    ReplyDelete
  30. Jo, I've often wondered how you do it! You post often and in my opinion your topics are always interesting and thought provoking. There's nothing boring about your blog! My blog is at a standstill right now. Just can't get motivated to post. So I do spend a lot of time on Facebook. I don't do any of the silly stuff on FB...I approach it like a mini-blog. I'm amazed at how many people from my past I've found through FB. And I started an alumni group for a company I used to work for. I'm having lots of fun re-connecting with former co-workers/friends on FB.

I've been spending a lot of time reading also. Enjoy your books!

  31. I know what you mean, Jo - I have scarcely had time to read, blog or do anything lately other than sleep and work. It's always such a pleasure to read your posts, though. Just post whenever you can. It's always thought provoking and interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I sometimes wonder the same about you dear Jo. You write such brilliant post that it makes one think that surely you do this as a career, but no...you are just like me. A working girl.

Take some time off. Enjoy your books and life. We'll still be here waiting.

  33. Offline life should always come first. If you're neglecting walks in the park, a movie in a proper cinema, talking to people in person, a good book, in favour of blogging then something is horribly wrong.

When we're all on our deathbeds none of us will wish we had 300 online followers instead of 3 true friends.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Totally off topic but I love the little signature at the bottom of your post! I want one! I keep seeing more of them and I'm jealous! You're going to be super jealous of me though, because I have TWO blogs going at the moment. I have a death wish though. It will come to an end at some point.

Thank you for visiting. It is always fun to read your comments, and I try really hard to respond to all comments. I love you all.
