The Hangover

I had some difficulty sleeping last night, so I decided to watch a movie. This movie had been highly recommended to me by a certain 14 (almost) year-old Phinnaeus, so I had my reservations. Then Phinnaeus said his mom loved the movie, and Phinnaeus's mom has a great sense of humor -- so I thought I would give the movie a try. Just by coincidence, on Sunday night the movie won the Golden Globe award for best comedy picture. It was also named one of the top ten movies of the year by the American Film Institute, so it had to have something going for it, right? I decided, what the heck ... what do I have to lose if I watch it.

Shocked and appalled doesn't even begin to cover my feelings when I began to watch the movie. It was vulgar, raunchy, perhaps even disgusting, but I stayed with it. A few minutes into the movie I heard a strange loud noise, and I realized it was me -- roaring with laughter. This movie is a train wreck, and I couldn't tear my eyes away from it. At first it feels like the usual stoner, college, frat-boy movie, but the humor and sense of the ridiculous -- while seeming over-the-top -- is actually too subtle and too funny for frat boys. It stars Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Zach Galifianakis and Heather Graham, and a cast of other characters, two-footed and four-footed. I'm actually embarrassed to recommend this movie, but I do. Get a big bowl of popcorn, perhaps a beer, and settle down to watch it.

Phil: "Whose baby is that?"
Alan: "I dunno. Check its collar or something."

Oh, goodness...

Cheers,

When I saw the post title I thought "Jo! With a hangover? What's the world coming to!" Not that you couldn't ever have one, but it seems very un-Jo-like.

I'll bet I would enjoy this movie a lot. I'll have to check it out.

At times disgusted and other times rolling with laughter, it was a good show. Me and my husband had a good time watching it together.

Oh Jo,
I feel the same way when I watch The Office. Slightly mortified that I find it so darned FUNNY!
Now I'll have to watch the Hangover.

I thought it was the funniest thing I've seen since Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Raunchy yes, but I so dug it.

Lana and I watched it. We thought it was pretty good, but not as good as we'd hoped.

Hmmm. I had the same thought as The Bug when I saw the title of your post. It seemed unlikely.

It was funny, to say the least! Our daughter rented it for us. We were appalled by the raunchiness of it - but we laughed a lot. At the end, mr. kenju said it was too stupid.

I thought this was going to be below average, but have to concur that I found it deeply hilarious and was in an uncontrolable fit of the giggles throughout in the cinemas :) I think it's the performances by the undoubtably very comedically talented cast that does it personally

I love a crazy, goofy movie every now and again, and The Hangover is on my list of movies to watch.

Oh Jo thank goodness it was the sound of you laughing - because that is exactly what I did too :) I had just snuck out of an even worse (much worse) film with my younger brother and we decided on this one instead - I loved the tiger!! Yes, crazy, but it is brilliant when something unexpected makes you laugh...

I too, was very surprised to find that I enjoyed this movie. I didn't think I would like it at all.

I am so relieved that you liked it. I value your movie opinions and have seen some of the movies you've suggested and have loved all of them. Every single person I know who has seen this movie has told me I need to go see it.
So glad you echoed that opinion. I would have gone to see it regardless, but would have probably felt raunchy and tawdry doing so.
Ah, well then!

You had me going for a minute, Jo! Thanks for the great movie review, cher! I'll check it out!

I was going to give this a miss but since you recommend it......I might just have a look-see. If I am forever lost in the world of frat-boy humor, I will come back to haunt you! :)

I admit that we roared with laughter when we saw this in the theatre! That scene where they find the guy in the trunk just killed me!

Sounds like a movie I will enjoy. I love Ed Helms. He is my favorite "Office" character.

I too thought it was hilarious! I never trust a movie my son recommends, but I'm glad I listened to him on this one.

About a week after it hit theaters, my mother called me and said she was going to see The Hangover with one of her girlfriends. I immediately told her she might be making a mistake, as I didn't know how my mother could take a 2 hour movie full of every curse word and blow job reference known to man. A few hours later I got a call back from her and could barely make out what she was saying over her laughing. She said she had never laughed that hard during a movie since I was born in 1990...go figure!

I often listen to a local radio show calls "Sports and More." Usually the two guys spend more time on the "more" than sports.

One afternoon they spent nearly the entire two hour show talking about The Hangover.

I have always figured it was a movie people in the 35 and under crowd would like but not me. After reading all these comments and your post I will watch it.

I have a feeling it will bring back some memories of my extremely misspent youth!

Hello, everyone! Everyone who watched this movie loved it, and everyone who has not seen it yet is in for a HUGE treat. You cannot watch it without laughing. I dare you...! I'm going to watch it again. I'm sure there is something I have missed.

Have a fabulous day, everyone!

Cheers,

Jo

What's funny, is that by coincidence, also watched this movie on Sunday night. A loaned DVD from a friend who thought it hilarious.

Hated it.

Wondering what's wrong with my sense of humour?

I had tears rolling down my face the first time I watched The Hangover. When the Asian jumps out of the trunk, I LOST IT. My best friend went to see it in the theater and bugged me ever since to go see it. She made me call her when I got to the trunk part. And I couldn't talk and I was barely breathing. But this is my humor. Everyone else says raunchy and I say hilarious.
I giggle just thinking about it. I had to buy it when it came out. Without seeing it first. I'm glad I did. It's on my most watched list now...
Oh and if you read my two newest posts you'll know who I'm talking about when I say "The Dan Band Kicks Ass!" haha!

Jo said...

VioletSky, I can see why you would have hated it. I am actually quite surprised that I loved it...! :-)

Miranda, oh, yes the trunk. I lost it when they walked in and found Mike Tyson sitting at the piano. "What have you done with Mike's tiger?" Omigawd!

If it's funny I'll laugh. If it's sad I'll cry. If there's injustice I'll get angry. I don't care how the powers that be decide to label and market it.
