I think the American folks really got it right with the new health care legislation, and I think in time it will benefit everyone. It may not be perfect, and it will probably require some fine-tuning over the next few years, but the main thing is that in the long term it will help people. It's regrettable that the debates about this issue have caused so much bitterness and animosity in the U.S., but hopefully that will subside. To me, the new legislation is all about charity and kindness towards people who are less fortunate. The most over-looked demographic in almost every country is the working poor, those folks who fall into that grey area between middle-class and poverty. This bill will help them. Health care should not be about big business, but rather it should be about a country being able to look after the health and well-being of its people. Life is a pre-existing condition.
Congratulations to the Americans for getting it right.

I agree Jo. As a working person without medical aid, I have recently had to resort to government medical assistance and while not all prettied up in smart hospital decor, I had the procedures done that I needed to put my mind at rest.
Thank you JO, I hope you are right...I think you are right.
This is something our country has needed for a very long time. I was shocked at the behavior of some Americans during the last several months. We should have been working together to better our country not battling to "win the game".The lying that has been going on is sickening to me, it is brain washing really. The Insurance companies need this reform. I have had to get Government help with medical care recently and my parents are both on a government run health care system, here in America, so I have confidence that we can make things a whole lot better now that a law has been passed in the peoples favor.
It is a start. Like you said, it will need to be fine tuned.
I like that last line, "Life is a pre-existing condition." If we could just take fear out of the mix I think we could make some more progress. There's fear that the care we receive will not be as good (for those of us who have good coverage), fear that the care of others will come out of our pocket, thus decreasing our standard of living, and fear that this will all go awry and we'll be in an even worse situation. Of course, beyond all the fear is greed...This wouldn't be our health care system if someone weren't getting rich of it.
It'll be interesting to see what happens.
Yes, congrats and about time....in fact long overdue.
Right on! Jo
You are so right, Jo. This is a historical change in America and a much needed one:)
As an American I think if this was baseball and the Health Care Bill was the batter, he got a sloppy single to first, but yeah at least he is on first base.
Canada, why do you hate Ann Coulter? Oh,wait, so do we...nevermind.
To be sure, that sun shining is actually Ted Kennedy smiling down on us. Thanks, Jo, and thank you, Senator Kennedy.
Well, I'm not so sure about that but I love it that you're so optimistic! So I thank you because I know you mean well. :-)
At the end of the day I think things will be better. We have a better crappy system. I would not call it fixed though. I just hope that people don't focous on repelling the bill, just adjusting it here and there.
I agree, Jo. It's too bad that the most vocal of Americans at the moment are those who act as if Obama is the devil because he signed this bill.
I think they might end up deciding it was for the best.
it's nice to hear something
nice about us.
i pray that you are right and
that everyone else i love and
trust is not.
we can be surprised sometimes.
blessings,

Thanks for the encouraging words, Jo! We've had so much anger and fear in this debate that I think some people have a hard time cutting through all of it to see the good that can come from this reform. It will need fine-tuning in the coming years, but it's a good start to help those who haven't had the advantages from which so many of us have benefited. It will also help those who have had medical insurance, but reached their maximum lifetime benefits long before their illnesses had run their course. I'm proud of our leaders for finally addressing this problem, even if the answer isn't perfect.
As a supporter who argues long and hard for the bill's passage, I'm the first to admit that it contains some glaring problems. But so did Social Security and Medicare when first passed. The lawsuits springing up should be dismissed and the GOP promises to repeal the bill are only a fund raising gimmick. Now we can go to work on making it better.
Had to delete my comment because I didn't get the address right. Trying again, I am optimistic that this health care bill is at least a start in the right direction. Read Tom Friedman's column in the NY Times today for some possible fixes to our broken system, in his column entitled A Tea Party Without Nuts.
I agree too...congrats to the Americans ! They are really the great and wise peoples....!!
life is a preexisting condition - every insurance company exec should be told that!
It was a tough task. Now, we need to get the details right too.
Amen Jo, amen !
I honestly didn't think it was going to make it... so maybe there is some hope for America yet...
I don't yet know of anyone who fully understands the new bill, but we are all hopeful that it will make things better for the forgotten people in our society, the ones who work hard and rarely reap the fruits of their own labor. I do hope it turns out to be as good as Canada's.
Why thank you, kid neighbor!!
Aloha from Hawaii, Jo

Thank you for your optimistic outlook. It is a start in the right direction, I think.
Love your new blog look, Jo!
As you might know in the Netherlands they're far ahead with their health care, but in living here I don't know if this is going the right direction -it seems so contrary to how many people here in the USA view life!
And the insurance companies here? -I'm sick of them, I don't think they benefit the people at all, only themselves. I think they need an overhaul first, before they reform health care in general.
I know I have a strong opinion, but I do have Europe to compare it with:)
I see it as Much Do Abou Nothing, probably because of my personal belief that Insurance (including insurance companies) is the root to a lot of evil in any society.
The fight may be soon over but then the war begins.
Absolutely agree with you! :)
US-America should have done this sooner, but better later, than never!
I agree, Jo! And wish it could have been done years ago. I'm in the grey area. Haven't been able to afford health insurance for the last 10 years. And I'm in a lot of debt from the procedures I had to have done to diagnose my severe back problems. (Thank goodness I have good credit!) I will be on Medicare before most of this bill takes effect. But I'm so glad for those who need this and who will benefit greatly. Of course, it's not perfect. And I am dismayed by some of the ugly stuff that is going on right now.
Agreed!
I just hope you are right. I am feeling really pissed right now. Too many idiots are stirring the pot! Arrrggghhh!
From what I understand this new legislation won't really accomplish much but gives Obama something to say he did and the opposition something to rally against in the next election.
"Life is a pre-existing condition".
I love that :)
I haven't been over to your blog for awhile - I really love the new design!
Thanks Jo! It's about time we did it right!
"Life is a pre-existing condition." I do like that quote-well said. Having said that, I'm not a fan of the legislation nor its passage. That's okay however, because life would be rather boring if we did not have disagreement. I struggle with the concept of welfare, and a government forcing its people to support the lifestyles of others. I believe the United States has passed its apex as a world power and programs like this that gives assistance to many while removing the incentives for achievment will lead to an ever-increasing unambitious civilization. I see this apathy firsthand in my career and I fear providing for others will only cultivate that culture. I sincerely hope I am wrong, but time will tell.
I agree with Duta - except this "nothing" is going to cost us a LOT of $$$.
Happy that you're optimistic, however. I hope it comes out that way.
