Phinnaeus is a great kid, currently trying to navigate the stormy waters of being 14. I don't use the word "blessings" lightly, but Phinnaeus has been blessed with many things in his life, including parents who encourage his talents, both musical and academic. And, as with most 14 year-old boys, he is sometimes not able to see his own talents. When he was small, his nickname was "the little professor" because he could expound on any subject. I was a bit concerned that he would grow up to be a teeny bit nerdish, but in a nice way, you know. But he has actually grown up to have an "inner cool" -- you know the kind that all of us recognize, except the person who actually has it. He definitely is his own person. He's growing up too fast, though. It seems like just last week he and I used to walk around the neighborhood singing the songs from
Alice in Wonderland --
"They're painting the roses red, they're painting the roses redddddddd..." That was just week, wasn't it?
He did a fabulous job at his concert last night, and he's definitely going to be a cool dude, no matter what he chooses to do in his life. Way to go, Phinnaeus...!

There's just no substitute for supportive parents (or grandparents) is there? He's fortunate to have you to remind him of who he is. That is such a difficult age; I wouldn't go back for all the tea in China...

ReplyDeleteI think you're right, I think fourteen is a difficult age, particularly for boys. They feel very grownup, and as if they should be even more so. I think it's hard to be a kid in today's world, I truly do. I think it has challenges that I don't quite understand fully. My son (who is 19 now) and I have talked about it in the past, and honestly, some of the things that were a daily part of his high school experience just weren't part of mine. Things do change.
Hey, remember a few posts back when we were talking about the series 7 Up? The entire premise of that series was "Give me the child at 7, and I'll give you the man." (might be a slight paraphrase)...and it's quite true in so many ways.
He clearly is a very well loved young man, both by you and his parents. That's a huge thing to have in a life.
Children are most always a reflection of their parents.
ReplyDeleteSounds like Phinnaeus has some great parents. And guess what? Phinnaeus' grandmother is the mother of HIS mom! And my guess is that his mom is very much like YOU.
And my guess that is YOU are very much like YOUR mom.

ReplyDeleteWe could have the same grandson! Mine (the one who will be 14 next week) also plays trombone and has always been his own person, not following in the steps of his peers. He's giving up his beloved camp this summer, so he can go to band camp and secure his place in the high school band in the fall.

I think its amazing to see kids as they grow into themselves. Phinnaeus sounds like a very unique "old soul." Glad to hear his performance went well.
ReplyDeleteThe teenage years are always a difficult time to get through. And I think these days it's even harder that when I was young. I think he's very lucky to have a grandmother who is actually sensitive to his needs. Kudos to Phinneas and his grandma!
