Beam Me Up...!

Time Magazine recently listed the 50 best inventions of 2009. Among them are a $10 million light bulb, a $20 knee, a bladeless fan, dandelion rubber, a human powered vending machine, an edible race car, a 3-D camera, Tweeting by thinking (huh?), the Handyman's X-ray vision, and my favorite -- teleportation. Yes! Now, that's one I like. Can you imagine? It's Sunday afternoon, you're looking for something to do -- perhaps somewhere to go for the afternoon. You sit back in your big cozy chair, close your eyes, and teleport yourself to any destination in the world. Want to visit the Louvre for the afternoon? *Poof* you're there. Have a friend you'd like to visit? "Beam me up."

Or perhaps you're having friends over for dinner, and you want to surprise them with your culinary delights. You could log onto Maxim's Restaurant in Paris, and download lobster salad on a bed of asparagus, with mixed baby greens and balsamic vinaigrette, a filet of beef with PĂ©rigueux sauce, baby vegetables in their own juice with peas and "Pommes Maxim", and a raspberry napoleon for dessert. Would your guests be impressed? Oh, goodness yes. Your guests could imbibe in all sorts of wonderful wines and liqueurs because they wouldn't have to worry about driving home afterwards. They would just step into the teleportation machine, et voila!, they are safe at home. And afterwards you could teleport the folks from Molly Maid over to do the clean-up. Is that a perfect world or what? Why has it taken so long to invent teleportation? How have we lived without it for so long?

If you could teleport yourself to any place in the world -- right now -- where would it be?

Cheers,

Love this. I was always a big "Jetsons" fan! Lets see....if I could be anywhere right now I would beam myself to Bora Bora, in one of those little huts that sit over the ocean. I'd be wearing something cool and light and sipping a native drink of some kind - maybe served in a coconut. :-)

I want to go to England, Scotland, France and Thailand. Not all at once, mind you. But right this minute, I only want to be right here in my own nest. There is a blanket of snow on the ground and my husband and step-buddy are across town. Noone here but me and my old love-doggy. Bliss.

There's no doubt: the bridge of the Starship Enterprise with Capt. Picard. Oh, right. They aren't real. Well, then, how about Pandora's floating gardens? Oh, dang. I guess I'll stay right here in the Pacific Northwest and enjoy the rain...

I've always said that if I could have any super power it would be teleportation. I think it is the most practical. I think I would teleport hubby and I to a tropical vacation where no one can find us and there is no cell phone reception. Ahhh sunshine and warmth!

Teleportation; the most common sense form of travel and one that should have been perfected long ago.

I picture teleportation booths all over, just like the old phone booths. And of course we have teleportation stations at home and at work.

So where would I go?

First, I'd stop to pick up my guy, who is currently driving up the highway after two weeks in North Carolina.

Then, there's a rock I know on the little volcanic island of Saba. I was thinking of it yesterday, in fact. It is without a doubt the most beautiful place I have ever been and my sweetheart's never seen it.

It is on high ground. It is a large rock at the end of a dirt road. And I sat there every morning for four days, sipping coffee, surrounded on three sides by a view of the bluest ocean I have ever seen.

Off in distance you can see St. Maarten and St. Eusatasius, Nevis and St. Kitts. It is breathtaking.

There. Now, please.

I've always wanted to see the wilds of Africa, like in Out of Africa, so I'd be tempted to teleport myself there. It'd be a lot warmer than where I am now!

They invented teleportation?!?!

No-one tells me NUTHIN'.

And I'd just go everywhere..... the list is too enormous..... but Japan is sitting at the top. :D

Right NOW... I'd go to a little restaurant we found in Cartagena, Columbia for lunch. I'd have their fantastic coconut rice with a side of fresh fruit.

Armchair travel is almost as good as the real thing Jo - I've always said the planning of a trip is half the fun, well, almost half!

Just yesterday I finished Beneath a Marble Sky by John Shors for my book group. It's the story of the building of the Taj Mahal, but fictionalized. Agra is southeast of Delhi, so I traveled up the road via Lonely Planet to Delhi and then up to Lahore (it was called "The Long Walk" in the book) which is in Pakistan.

Since it's not likely I'll get to India anytime soon, I turned my focus to my hometown, San Francisco. I'm yearning for a travel fix obviously, so your post certainly validates our wistful travel plans!

Haha...laughing at green panda. I was also left out on knowing this. I am ready to go anywhere. Warm, that is!

There are so many places I want to see, but I'd choose the pyramids first, and the Roman Forum Second. I've already been to the Forum, but I really want to go back to Rome!

Right this very minute (with a whining dog and a fussy toddler and a baby twisting my insides every which way) I would love to be at a European spa. Perhaps situated on the edge of the Swiss Alps where I could enjoy the view while being sumptuously pampered. I could use a bit of pampering!

If I had the power of teleportation I would at last be able to see my family nearly as often as I'd like.

Jo,
Long time no see (or is it read?).
I know I say this each time I drop by here, but this has really developed into an extraordinary blog. I feel like mine is such a brown paper bag. =)

I think about you and your friends each time I hear about the coming olympics. Must be a very exciting place to be right now.

I'm out and about in the cyberhood passing out cigars. As of Friday, I'm a grandpa for the first time.

Enjoy the winter games!

Nancy, can I join you? The waves would be spashing on the shore, and the sun would be warm... *sigh*

Lindy, I think the best journey of all is to be where we are right this moment, and to be happy to be here. Oh, yes!

DJan, oh, yes, the lovely, rainy Pacific Northwest. *sigh* Well, at least we don't have to shovel it. *heh*

Dudette, oh yes. Did you ever see a movie called "Castaway" with Tom Hanks? I have often thought that would be the idea situation, with just a few more creature comforts, of course. :-)

Susan, oh my goodness, just reading your description of that wonderful place, I was teleported there myself. Thank you! Now I'm going to Google it and have a look. :-)

Houndstooth, Africa, yes! My mother was born and raised there, so when I saw "Out of Africa" it made me think of her, and how much I would love to visit there one day.

Stephen, yes, they have invented teleportation, only it's just at the atomic level at the moment. And yes, Japan would be on my list too -- even for just the food!

Teri, oh that sounds wonderful...! My brother has been there and he loved it, and he said the people were very nice too.

Amy, India is at the very top of my list of places I would love to visit. I imagine it would be almost another world. The music and food and architecture and culture ... it's so beautiful. San Francisco is a beautiful city too!

Brenda, yes, somewhere warm with sandy beaches, pale green water, palm trees, light breezes, warm sunshine ... I'm ready to pack my bags? I wonder if teleportion requires luggage? :-)

Kenju, I would love to visit Rome. My goodness, I think it must be one of the most vibrant, exciting cities in the world. Yes!

Whitney, yes, wouldn't it be wonderful to just teleport ourselves to visit the people we haven't seen for a while? I wonder if teleporters have doorbells? :-)

Tom...!!! Talk about mental telepathy (as opposed to teleportation...) I was thinking about you just today, and wondering how you are. Congratulations on being a new Grandpa...!

Warm & Sunny that's where you'll find me. We've been in the single digits and twenties for days , with a fierce wind. Argh. Yes, warm, with a capitol WARM and sunny.

Jo said...

Cyth, we have the 2010 winter Olympics coming here in two weeks, and we have tulips and daffodils blooming. *sigh* I think right now we could use a little cold weather. But me? I would love to be on a tropical beach. :-)

I like the castaway island thing with running water and a frig of course, books and internet would be good too. But first my husband is hooked on watching travel videos of Europe so we had better go there.

Dear Jo,
hopefully you are fine. This entry of yours makes me indeed think, when will be the time, when one does have enough?
If I could change the place where I am, it would become Prague and me living a life as a window cleaner.
A wonderful start into the new month and week as well.

My problem with the Star Trek transporter is that it tears you apart into billions of pieces. It kills you. Sure it can put you back as good as new but all that being torn apart into billions of pieces has to have some wear and tear over time. And computers malfuntion from time to time. Do you really need your nipples on your knees?

Then there's transporter psychosis. That can't be fun. And knowing us we'd probably get transporter rage if there was too much traffic [it took 1/2 second instead of 1/4 second].

We'd also become complacent and see transporting as a chore. You want me to go where? But Jersy Shore is on. Remember how excited people were when cars were invented? Now who wants to take mine out for an oil change?

Well, right now, as it is January in Minnesota, I'd like to go to a warm beach somewhere.. not too fussy as long as it's not humid. And then later I want to go to Czech Republic and then to Botswana. Fun to dream!! I like the idea of teleporting in food from all over the world!

Jo
I am afraid I would be greedy!. I would teleport myself anywhere that appealed at the moment and just drop in to many places!
Although I never do this with TV, I expect I might be the equivalent of a channel surfer if teleporting! The excitement would be too great...at least initially

Beam me up!!!! I'd be in Ireland. Much of my ancestry is from Ireland and I've always wanted to go. I grew up with my Irish Grandfathers stories of leprechauns, fairies and the wee people. And of course on dark and stormy nights the banshee. I'd be off to the emerald isle! ;)

I enjoyed reading where everyone would want to go.

As I am already in the tropics, I would want to get away to somewhere different. Paris, London or Tokyo and of course, Vancouver's Winter Olympics would be nice.

Beam me up, Scottie :)

Pretty much everywhere. Both the places I've loved and the ones I haven't seen yet. I have dreamed of being able to teleport myself all my life. And from there, it's only a short step to time travel, so would you like to meet me at Maxim's in 1935 tomorrow? That raspberry napoleon sounds very yummy.

Well, the first stop on my teleportation tour will have to be the inside of a bank vault with lots of money in it.

There are lots of places on my bucket list. But I'm currently reading "Anne Frank Remembered" by the late Miep Gies. I love history. So RIGHT NOW I want to be teleported to Amsterdam.

TC, if you go to Europe, be sure to go to Paris...!

Robert, Prague? A window cleaner? Oh, goodness. :-)

Mia. LOL. Jersey Shore? I have not seen that yet, and I am afraid to watch it. I might get hooked. *heh* And then maybe I'll teleport myself there.

Carol, wouldn't it be wonderful to teleport wonderful food from all over the globe? Oh, goodness!

Linda, a channel surfing teleporter...! Now there's a great idea. Hmmmm....

A Woman, Ireland, yes! I have always wanted to go there too. My ancestry is also from Ireland.

Enid, you would love Vancouver. We're almost the tropics now too. The winter Olympics are in a couple of weeks, and we have tulips and daffodils blooming. *sigh*

Susan, yes! Maxim's 1935 -- tomorrow! Meet you there. Let's wear something slinky and shimmery. :-)

Firefly, well, anyplace in Canada -- except Vancouver -- has snow right now. *sigh* I would love to go to South Africa!

Meggie, Vancouver is wonderful in the summertime, and we have some of the best restaurants in the world here. :-)

LGS, LOL...! Get some for me too. *heh*

Carla, I think I would love to see Amsterdam during the tulip season. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Sunny, I have never been to Montana. That would definitely be on my list.

Kathryn, oh yes! The Wickaninnish Inn overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It's gorgeous, isn't it?

Pauline, oh, yes. *heh* We'll bring them along.

Jack, have you ever been to Vancouver? I think you would love it.

Ivan, Britney? Well... Um... *heh*

Shelley, and the little pot of gold at the end of it too. :-)

Linday, don't give up blogging!
