A Breath Of Fresh Air

I think it must be very exciting for Americans to look forward to having children in the White House again. I'm not the biggest fan of Barack or Michelle Obama, (...sorry) but they sure have two beautiful, adorable little girls, and I think having them in the White House would be like a breath of fresh air. The laughter of children, and especially the giggling of little girls, can blow the cobwebs out of any stuffy old residence, can't it?

On Good Morning American this morning someone was saying that when any new President and his family moves into the White House, they have free rein to make the house their own home. They can bring in their own furniture, and paint the walls any color they wish. Nothing is more exciting to a little girl than being able to decorate her own bedroom.

I just hope the world leaves them alone and allows them to grow up as normal little girls, out of the spotlight. They are both entering their teenage years very soon, and teenagers can be ... well ... teenagers. The press and the media can make a conscious choice to leave them alone, and I hope they do.

Bring on the Barbie dolls and pillow fights!

I second your hope about the world leaving them largely alone. But given the nature of the media I'm not expecting it. I also think it's good for a president to have kids around to remind him that the "future" is not just an imaginary place.

Yes, a breath of fresh air! They are a lovely family. Did you happen to see the "60 Minutes" interview Sunday night? They seem like such truly nice people.

I also think its a nice change. How I would love to be a fly on the wall to see what will be happening in the White House. My little girl is three and I can imagine what she would do with a new room and near endless funds to perk up her room.

They are beautiful, and that's a great shot that you included. They are innocent and uncomplicated right now. I hope they get to stay that way for a little longer. I hope no one does anything stupid.

As for the media, I don't know...they don't have a really good track record for giving girls space. I think of how they hounded and made fun of poor Amy Carter. She couldn't help it that she was going through her most awkward years while her dad was in office.

Peace - D

The lovely Obama girls are so very young! I also hope they'll be given a break by the press and by comics. The slightly older Chelsea Clinton was treated very badly by shows like Saturday Night Live and so were Jenna and Laura Bush but at least they were already 19-years old when their father took office.

I don't know about you, Josie, but to me there seems to be a difference between taking cheap shots at the older Presidential children when it comes to hair, skin, body type, aptitude or shyness, and making jokes about their actual actions like underage drinking, driving tickets or public rudeness.

One can choose to act in certain ways - one doesn't choose to be short or have freckles or skin that breaks out or a Southern accent. Making fun of natural attributes isn't funny - just mean and lazy.

They do seem like sweet girls but their time in the White House will be their most awkward and difficult years. The eldest will be 18 when she moves out if her Dad stays for 8 years so I do hope they will enrol both the girls in private school where they can meet other girls their own age and where their security people won't stand out "too" much. It's going to be hard for them but hopefully they will rally and roll with the punches.

The right thing to do would be to leave them alone but I just can't see American television doing the right thing.

Great post, Josie. I'm looking forward to a change, too. And the girls are definitely a sweet one.

When did the press ever leave anyone alone! I do hope the best for them. Maybe Grandma will help. D

Good point, Jo. They are gorgeous kids. Hopefully they'll be protected from that kind of media.
