Back to the Future...

Where were you on Friday, April 12, 2013?  That's the day Marty McFly came back to the future  -- all the way from the 1980s.  That, for me, was an interesting decade.

Shoulder pads, big hair, Calvin Klein perfume, Dynasty, Joan Collins.

Joan Jett.

Spandau Ballet...

Would Mary McFly recognize the world if he were to arrive here today?  We are able to sit  in comfort of our living rooms communicating with the world on these little screens with keyboards attached.  Got something to say?  Well, just say it, whether anyone is listening or not.  We can watch TV on our miniature smart phones while we're eating lunch in the food court.  See news happening?  Take a picture, tap the screen and e-mail the picture to every news agency in the world, et voila! the whole world can see it in nanoseconds.  Not just Big Brother is watching -- everyone is watching.  Everything.  All the time.  There is almost no such thing as the media anymore.  We are the media.  It may seem strange, but I like it.  I don't see it as an invasion of privacy, but rather as transparency.  Would the Boston Marathon bombing suspects have been apprehended without the social media?  Maybe not.  And the RCMP officers who tasered Robert Dziekanski to death at Vancouver Airport would never have been caught, had it not been for a bystander with a cell phone camera.

Oops.

This is a world Mary McFly would never have been able to imagine, back there in the deepest, darkest 1980s. In his 1986 State of the Union speech, President Reagan referred to the movie when he said, "Never has there been a more exciting time to be alive, a time of rousing wonder and heroic achievement. As they said in the film Back to the Future, 'Where we're going, we don't need roads' ". Well, we still need roads, we just don't have DeLoreans anymore.

Time travel has always fascinated me.  As yet, we cannot go forward in time, but we can go backwards.  If I could, I would go back to the 1980s and bring back a younger version of me.

And the Spandau Ballet.

best decade of my life, including Spandeau Ballet! I loved the '80's but I'm not so thrilled with all this technology. Yes, it has it's good points but I think we moved forward too fast to comprehend the consequences. With that I say...big hair, big shoulders, new-wave music, rocks!

I was at school and university in the 1980's and began my working life. I saw Spandau Ballet once....a very strange evening. Many happy memories but also a constant battle with chauvinism in both college and work in architecture, which I found VERY wearing! Things have changed , not just technologically!

The entire 1980's was my decade in hell...*shrug* I recovered though and live in beautiful Detroit where the sun always shines and the air is never warmer than 42 degrees(f).

You bring up a good point and made me realize that, all things considered, I am healthier and in better shape than I was in the 1980s when I smoked and ate terrible foods. I realized somewhere in there that I was going to have to change my ways if I wanted to be using this body in thirty years.

I recall this song but did not know the name of the group. I don't recall much of the 1980s or 1990s to be honest. Sort of a blur.

I DO remember the 1970s pretty well. I guess I was more drawn to groups like Bachman Turner Overdrive and songs like Let It Ride as opposed to the softer music such as this - heh!!

The 1980s. A decade when I worked in radio news. Challenger blew up on launch; Chernobyl blew up on shutdown. Riots in the UK and the US. I told the stories.

Are we any better off today? I'm not sure at all.

Blessings and Bear hugs!

Time travel ... if only we could do it for real, to the past of course.
The 1950s is the decade I love the most, and the early 60s.
My first love Stella was in 1951. And that's why the 50s is MY lovely time.
Ballroom dancing; 3 years in the RAF starting in '53; met my wife in 1957 and married her in '58.
Oh yes! Those were the days my friend, I thought they'd never end, (as the song goes).
Cheers Jo.

Heh, I mostly remember the shoulder pads. I had a bunch of sweaters with shoulder pads and finally let go of them sometime after 2000.

I graduated high school in 1980, so you can imagine how fun that whole decade was for me! And "True" happens to be one of my favorite songs. Oh how I wish I could relive the 80's! The music lives on, so I am thankful for that.
