Calamity Jo

Have you ever had days where you just know you should never have gotten out of bed? Well, my whole weekend was like that -- starting on Friday night. Want to hear about it? Oh, I know you don't, but I'll share it with you anyway. I think it all started when I broke my lucky bracelet. I have a beautiful bracelet that was given to me as a birthday gift, and I noticed when I started wearing it, that I had good luck. You know -- things like my bus showed up on time instead of always being ten minutes late, my computer at work stopped crashing every 15 minutes -- stuff like that. I knew soon as I started wearing it that it was definitely a lucky bracelet. Well, on Friday night just after work, one of the beautiful little beads broke. Fortunately I was able to contact the artisan who made my bracelet and she can fix it for me. Until then, I am walking on egg shells.

A few weeks ago someone on the bus stepped on my foot, and Saturday morning I noticed I am losing a toenail. So just as sandal weather rolls around, I will have ten perfect toes and nine perfect toenails. *sigh* On Saturday night a friend invited me for dinner at a Mexican restaurant. My friend told me it was the perfect little place, lovely ambience, good food, nice music. We were seated next to a party of 50, and they were well into the Tequila by the time we got there. And then I chomped on something that had a hidden hazelnut in it, and broke a crown off a front tooth. Oh yes. I looked charming. Where am I going to get a crown replaced on a weekend?

Wait, there's more...

When I got home Saturday night, I managed to flush the toilet roll holder down the toilet. I watched as it swirled down the toilet in what seemed like slow motion, but was really just a second -- too fast to retrieve it. I remember thinking, "I didn't know they could do that..."

Sunday morning I opened a kitchen cupboard to take out a cup, and the whole cupboard door fell off. I was beginning to see a pattern emerge. I stayed indoors all day Sunday; who wants to see a woman with a broken front tooth, in any case... On Sunday night as I lay in bed trying to get to sleep, I heard someone being shot. At first it sounded like firecrackers, and then I realized it was gunfire. I recognized the sound, even though it was not something we hear in our neighborhood. The gunfire was followed by sirens. Lots of sirens. As I lay there I thought, "I am listening to someone being killed", but fortunately the fellow survived, even though he was shot six times. The perpetrator escaped.

Monday morning I had an appointment with my dentist. When I got there, his clinic had been flooded by a broken pipe in the restaurant next door. He and his receptionist gathered everyone in their cars and drove us to his other clinic. The good news? My tooth is fixed.

It was a beautiful, sunny spring morning as I headed my way back to work yesterday morning. The sky was bright blue, the sun flooded the city. It was lovely. Everyone was in a cheery mood.

Today it's snowing...

I have to get my lucky bracelet fixed -- fast.

I must confess, Jo, I couldn't resist chuckling through your tale of misfortunes (aside from the shooting incident, of course). Not that I enjoy laughing at people when they are having a bad day (or weekend as the case may be); but you have a gift for portraying events in a very entertaining manner. My sympathies for your misfortunes and my your bracelet be fixed soon.

Oh Man.... if ever it rained it poured !!!!!! this is it. If I were you I would carry that broken bracelet in my pocket until I could get it personally to the fix-it person, then WAIT for it...bring a lunch if you have to. I do hope that it will be smooth sailing from now on.

Oh Jo- I am so sorry you had such a horrible weekend. I agree with Cyth, you really should carry that bracelet in your pocket until you get it fixed.

I have to admit, I can relate to the cabinate falling off. I have several cabinets in my kitchen that are falling off. The screw holes are stripped. I just hate to call maintance. I don't like strange men in my home without my husband here.

I did find the toilet paper roll flushing down the toilet a bit funny. I shouldn't laugh on your misfortune, but it was funny. I hope this week will be much better for you!

I am saying a novena for you now (lol). I love your blogs. You capture everyday life with such humor and sensitivity. I have certainly had days where I spend the majority of the time dropping things. I am not a klutz but my brain seems to take a vaca and the more I try to hold on, the more I drop. In my opinion it is God saying "Slooooowww Doooowwwwnn".

Ahh Jo, you do seem to have the worst luck sometimes.

Better have him/her make a spare for you also.

Oh Poor Jo! I hope that bracelet gets fixed quick! Your tale is funny (sorry!!) and it's nice to read about others having the same darn problems as me :-)

Jo, my mother-in-law (god rest her...was it a soul?..) always told me 'you make your own luck'
but I never wholly took this on board...I do know that "sometimes life pushes me and sometimes I can push it"...You know I think thats my entire credo in a phrase! In comments someone proposes getting a spare 'lucky bracelet' if you do don't be tempted to double your luck and wear both at the same time imagine losing two on the same day!
Love your blog..a window to a soul, thank you.

Wonderfully told tale of woe and misery. I am sorry you had to endure it for real but at least you know that we were entertained. have you fixed the bracelet yet?

Poor thing! I would have lost it with the cupboard door coming off in my hand. I did laugh a little, but only because you seem to be taking it all in stride (despite the hurt tootsie :-)

I had an unlucky weekend too... strange. I didn't hear anyone get shot though, scary!! I guess you live in a city? I have a forest outside my house and I hear hunters sometimes. Even that makes me cringe.

Oh Jo! I'm so sorry, but I'm LMAO, because I can so relate to some of this! You can even make a bad situation seem hilarious! I hope your toe and your tooth recover quickly! Please, get that bracelet fixed soon!

I'm glad the tooth is fixed. And that shooting really had nothing to do with your bracelet of course. The rest is doable. I suspect you'll be fine - with or without jewelry repairs. :)

Yeah, Jo. You really need to address this situation with the broken bracelet!

The toenail part is way too familiar, and the rest of this saga sounds like one of Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion stories where a situation just keeps getting worse. His remedy is rhubarb pie - got any of that handy, Josie?

Thanks, everyone...! I am getting the bracelet fixed this weekend. Until then -- watch out...! *heh*

And yes, I definitely need some rhubarb pie. I guess toast and ginger marmalade will have to do... :-)

Gosh - you must have been one of the most unlucky people ever -before you got your bracelet.
Or maybe the badluck only started after it broke?
