Morgellons ... Real or Imaginary ...?

Singer Joni Mitchell has recently announced that she is suffering from Morgellons disease. This is probably one of the strangest diseases in existence. Symptoms of the disease are:

■ Fibers, threads or black stringy material in and on the skin
■ Skin rashes or sores that can cause intense itching
■ Crawling sensations on and under the skin, often compared to insects moving, stinging or biting
■Severe fatigue
■ Inability to concentrate and short-term memory loss
■ Behavioral changes
■ Joint pain
■ Vision changes

Stringy material in the skin?  Oh, yuck...

The Center for Disease Control is conducting an epidemiological investigation of the condition, otherwise known as an "unexplained dermopathy". Most doctors and psychiatrists regard it as a delusinal parasitosis. Either way, it's a really creepy disease, but I am personally skeptical that this is a true disease.  I think it is probably a manifestation of a psychosomatic disorder.  However, I am not a doctor so I am not qualified to make any judgment about Morgellons etiology. Adults and Children are equally affected by the disease, and it appears to be recorded as far back as the 1600s.

Has anyone else heard of this strange condition?

Hmmm... sounds creepy indeed. I think I would just fall apart from the thought of it.

I read an article about it. Of course, the article told the story of a person with the condition so it made a pretty compelling argument for its existence. Regardless, it's something that should be figured out & solved!

I read up on this some time ago. It is a really, really weird disease. I don't think it is psychosomatic, but it is very strange. I feel so bad for Joni Mitchell.

Very creepy. It would be awful to feel that way. I wonder if it is real?

I have never heard of it before but would believe about anything at this point! There are so many strange conditions out there. I have a friend right now who is pregnant with her first child--child has already been identified as having a strange syndrome. Most infants do not survive 8 days after birth. Hopefully, the doctors who study our genetic make up will begin to find cures/remedies for these. D

Wow Jo. I've never heard of it but it sounds awful. Poor Joni, my heart goes out to her, real or imagined.

Yes, Jo - I have heard of Morgellon's. Very strange, indeed.
I have seen photos of brightly colored red and blue threads actually sprouting from small wounds in the skin - it is hard to imagine how someone could fake that, but it certainly is bizarre. I wonder if they have done DNA samplings of these weird sprouting threads?

It's an amazingly distressing disease, with those symptoms. I also feel terrible for Joni, and I cannot imagine how she must be suffering. Never heard of it before.

Oh I love Joni Mitchell. I have never heard of Morgellons, but it seems to me that the question is if it is a physcial or phsycological diesease. Either way its still a condition that exists because apperently a number of people suffer from its effects.

Have heard of it. I don't think it's psychosomatic. That's too easy an explanation.

Carol 2009

“Even though I didn’t have the fiber aspect of morgellons disease, I believe I would have gotten to that point had I not been introduced to NutraSilver®. I participated in a beta test using NutraSilver as a morgellons disease treatment. Within one week, the lesions began to heal and dissipate. After a few weeks, almost all of the sores were gone. I continued to experience outbreaks of the stinging and biting sensation that coincided with the full and new moon lunar phase. This phenomenon is consistent with reproduction in parasites and worms. As long as I took NutraSilver, the morgellons disease outbreaks were minor and the tiny sores healed immediately. If I stopped, the lesions rapidly multiplied and spread. I have now been taking NutraSilver® daily for morgellons disease treatment for over 2 years. I take 30 drops 2-3x/day. If I stop, the lesions recur.”

"I have suffered terribly for over 10 years with this horrible Morgellons disease. After trying every product under the sun, I finally discovered NutraSilver®.

Within 7 days of starting it, I noticed my thoughts became clearer, my energy began to come back, my depression seemed to vanish, the "creepy crawlies" began to diminish and best of all, my lesions began to heal for the first time in years. In a few weeks, they were completely healed. I have been symptom-free for nearly a year now and I am so very grateful for NutraSilver®."

I guess stringy, black things on the skin would lead to behavioral changes.

The mind is a complicated thing and can certainly affect the body.

Many years ago I was under a great deal of stress and woke up morning to find the skin on my hands peeling away. It looked like I had dipped my hands in acid.

That physical condition was caused by the stress. So the question would be was that condition to my hands a mental or a physical condition?

If someone is feeling physical discomfort, I have to respect that. I hope Joni Mitchell and any other person suffering from this condition can find relief.

I actually had heard about the symptoms of the disease a couple of months ago, but the clinical title initially didn't sound familiar.

It is strange indeed.

Very odd! I had to Google it as I had never heard of it before reading your post either The article I read (with photos)shows a three year old child with the condition hard to believe he'd be faking it very very weird some of the photos look like the person has just scratched themself raw but with magnification you can then see the "threads"- there but for fortune. . .
