Congratulations to the Americans...

They caught the son-of-a-b*tch and he was respectfully buried at sea, according to Islamic law.  Do you think he is cavorting with 63 virgins now? No, he's fish food.  How appropriate, considering there's something fishy about the fact that the Pakistanis have been harbouring this man for so many years -- hiding him in plain sight.

There were eight children killed on the hijacked planes on 9/11, five children on American 77 ranging in age from 3 to 11, and three children on United 175 ages 2, 3, and 4. Babies...!  When I heard that, I was disgusted. Any man who would allow children to be killed in the name of terrorism is a coward, and in my opinion all bets are off as to what happens to him.  We can say a prayer for his soul, and then pray for healing.

Congratulations to the Americans for their tenacity.  Let's hope this is the beginning of the end, and not the end of the beginning...

I know there's a chance this will lead to more terrorism, but for today, it feels good to have finally found the man who caused so much grief over so many years. With you, I'm hoping it's the beginning of the end.

I'm very glad we got him, but it seems almost anticlimactic as he was a symbol, albeit a most evil one, and has many, many supporters who will carry on his work. I very much hope there will not be repercussions, and am praying for peace while bracing for the worst.

And yes, tenacity is a most American attribute. Thanks for noticing!

I pointed out where he was and how well he was protected to my retired State Department friend, who spent most of his career in the Middle East, he said that Packistan isn't a cohesive country and the ones protecting him were military while the ones taking our billions in aid are not the military.

I am proud of our smart, well trained, sneaky as heck President, CIA and miliary for finally hunting down the dog and killing him. Note, we didn't go in there with a big ole bomb destroying half a city of 100,000, we went in there and shot the guy in the head. The cowards around him used a woman as a shield, but we still got him despite the woman dying too. But that's on the coward's soul.

What do "I" think?

I think this action will cause worse retaliation against our troops abroad, then the pastor in Florida who wanted to have the mass quran burning.

I find it hysterically hypocritical of the president, general petraeus, and the news media to condemn a citizen - pastor or no - for exercising their free speech and expression with the pretense of "doing so will cause more endangerment to our troops", and then in the next breathe have osama bin laden assassinated, while going on a news media crusade gloating about it.

Perspective.

For the record, I'm very glad that the islamic terrorist osama bin laden was executed!!!

I also served my country for six years.

I love this country and I love the freedom it has enjoyed under God's blessings...not governments dictates.

Firstly its 72 not 63....LOL

i congratulate those men and women who successfully completed this mission.

Another evil has died. A great day not only for the Americans but also for the rest of humanity.

@Charlene

Totally agree with you except the part : "the ones taking our billions in aid are not the military."

The "one" who took more than 3.5 billion (from Reagan) to create the terror infrastructure during 80s....and the "one" who took more than 10 billion(from Bush) to fight against the same terror during 2000-2008 were both MILITARY DICTATORS known as Zia and Musharaff.....stop feeding them!

Now is a time for sober and mature reflection, not glee. Mindless celebration is both spiritually inappropriate and politically naïve. I hope those who think they can use force in any way will think twice before acting. That means US as well as THEM.

One down, only a few thousand to go. Pakistan has a lot to answer for. Still, that's what you get for dealing with two-faced and corrupt administrations.

I completely agree with the very wise words of socrates1, Leslie, and PhilipH.

I second the feelings of Leslie and Christine.

I think it's a good thing they "got" Bin Laden, and I believe it was him. But it makes me just a little squeamish to see people cheering and chanting USA! over this. Are these the same people who are against the death penalty? Are these the same people who want to shut down Guantanamo (even tho' we don't know what to do with those prisoners)? And if you share socrates1's worry about retaliation, well the the best way to get it is to rub the thing in the Muslim face.

Not that I rue the death of Bin Laden. I just don't think it's anything to be happy about. Bin Laden was a nasty person. Going after him was nasty business. And there's still plenty more nastiness out there to deal with.

Amelia, it had to be done, didn't it? Unfortunately...

Margaret, I'm hoping it's the beginning of the end too...!

Susan, well, there has definitely been enough time to train his followers, sadly.

Charlene, he was found in a "middle class" neighbourhood with doctors and lawyers. I think people knew he was there, definitely.

Socrates, unfortunately, I agree with you. I think there will be retaliation for this, and he will be made a martyr. That is almost sure to happen.

IP 72? Oh, goodness. :-) But yes, it had to be done. Bin Laden was right up there with Hitler and Stalin, as far as evil is concerned.

Leslie, yes, I don't believe in the "eye for an eye" philosophy. But this man had to be taken out. Sometimes it just has to be done.

Philip, yes I think they knew all along just where he was.

Alicia, the beginning of the end, yes.

Duta, but unfortunately, Bin Laden did not agree with that philosophy, and because of that, thousands of innocent people have died, on "our" side as well as "their" side. He had to be eliminated.

Christine, I don't think anyone wants to dance on someone else's grave, but perhaps his death has prevented more unnecessary deaths from occurring.

Sightings, yes Bin Laden was a nasty piece of business. He dealt in death. What is the saying, "He who lives by the sword dies by the sword". That was the chance Bin Laden took when he started killing innocent people. He is quoted as saying on 9/11, "The pieces of the bodies of infidels were flying like dust particles. If you would have seen it with your own eyes, you would have been very pleased, and your heart would have been filled with joy."

He who lives by the sword...

Someone today asked if the killing of Bin Laden would only lead to more violence.

The question was answered by reminding the person that Al Capone was killed and that did not end organized crime. But the killing of Capone and those like him sent a message to the underworld that violence and crime would not be tolerated by a civilized society.

The same is true with Bin Laden. His death will not end terrorism but it sends a strong message to those who believe in it.

As a civilized world we cannot allow people to engage in acts of terrorism.

Jo said...

Russell, that's very true. Terrorism will never be eradicated, but at least one part of the Hydra's head has been chopped off. And the Americans will now be viewed as a force to contend with.

I still remember when the Canadian government rescued 6 Americans in 1980. The Canadians managed to get 6 Americans out of of Tehran after American hostages were taken three months earlier.

The "Thank You Canada" signs and billboards were seen all over the United States. In Des Moines, Iowa, I saw more than one huge billboard with the "Thank You Canada" on it.

This terrorism business is nothing new. But the Bin Laden episode brings back memories of that time.

We all have to work together.

I understand that you have to be angry at someone, and its seems you and everyone are angry with Bin Laden, because the media has painted this evil picture of him. Where is the prove that any of what you wrote is true? (About the plane incident) where is the prove that he was resonsible for it.

So much for the Liberals being soft of Terrorist. Difference we don't use them to frighten the American people to keep voting us in office. Now the Republicans will need to create another Monster to keep us on our toes.

Blowback? There will always be terrorism...

Thanks Jo for saying what so many of us are thinking. I'm glad we never gave up. I also think Pakistan has some "splainin" to do. I hope our troops can come home soon or sooner.

To all those who rejoice at and celebrate the killing, on the net and in the streets: Is this America, the great liberal, civilized nation?

OK - Osama was evil and a terrorist (though only a primitive symbol, not the brains), but he was shot while unarmed and thrown to the fish No attempt to capture him alive to stand trial (these trivial human rights procedures are only for dumb republican Bush, not for the enlightened , liberal democrat Obama).

Maybe it was not possible to capture him, but why make it a festival, why force the muslim world plan some dreadful revenge against americans?!

Of course, there is a sense that justice has been served and that Osama bin Laden has paid the price for his crime. But I suspect, for many of us, it still seems that he got off lightly for causing so much pain and hurt to so many people.

I just want to point out though that in no way is a burial at sea respectful of Islamic practices. Islamic practice is to bury the dead wrapped in a white shroud and facing Mecca.

Jo said...

Russell, yes, Canadians died on 9/11, and Canadians have died in Afghanistan too.

Kirsten, I am just glad they got the s-o-b.

BamaTrav, well, let's just hope he is not cavorting with 72 virgins. :-)

Hebah, bin Laden originated al-Qaeda, and he has admitted to the terrorist attacks. He is proud of them.

Ris, yes there will always be terrorism, but I think they have cut the head off the Hydra. They have also confiscated all bin Laden's records. There is no question he needed to be eliminated.

John, yes, I think the Pakistanis knew all along that he was there, and even protected him. They indeed have some 'splainin to do!

Duta, it had to be done. "He who lives by the sword…" His death has saved many future lives, make no mistake, not only in the western world, but in the Middle East as well.

Dianne, yes. They certainly know what they're doing, don't they? Bin Laden was a blood-thirsty monster.

Calvin, I understand his body was washed and wrapped in a white shroud, according to Islamic practices. Of the almost 3,000 people who died on September 11, 2001, only half of them have ever been identified. So I think Osama bin Laden was buried with more respect than he deserved under any circumstances.

Absolutely agree. Three cheers for the death penalty. We have so many murderers and rapists walking free after serving curtailed sentences. They just do it all over again.
